(Please note: this course is currently being updated into CD-ROM format.)
Hebrew - Learn as you Read is a carefully programmed course of ten lessons in which the student learns the basic principles of the language while studying the Hebrew text of Genesis. If done intensively, this course can be completed in ten weeks! It is a totally self-instructional method of becoming familiar with the Hebrew characters, text, pronunciation and grammar for the complete beginner.
Accuracy monitored by the Rev A Motyer, M.A., B.D.
On completing this course you will be able to:
1. Read the creation narrative in the Hebrew Bible (Genesis 1:1 to 2:3), using the pronunciation of modern Hebrew, and understanding all you read.
2. Continue studying Hebrew in a more traditional form with the satisfaction of having already broken the back of the difficult initial stages of mastering the strange characters, grammatical forms and pronunciation.
Containing from one to two weeks' home study. Modern type face is used for the Hebrew characters in the Lesson Book.
a) the Hebrew text of Genesis 1:1 to 2:3, with interlinear pronunciation and translation into English, and with other useful helps, such as notes, code numbers and root identification. The Hebrew characters used in this reading book are from the British and Foreign Bible Society's Hebrew text, by their kind permission.
b) a coded vocabulary of all the Hebrew words (both Hebrew to English and English to Hebrew) which appear in this passage, with their references.
c) The answers to the tests; to be used as feedback AFTER doing each test.
An audio cassette recording of the passage allows the student to read the passage aloud with modern pronunciation.
Setting out the simple points of grammar needed to understand the passage studied, these can be hung in a prominent place for constant reference.
'Your text de-mystified the language and instilled a confidence in the students that Hebrew not only could be learned, but could indeed inform their practical exegesis in everyday ministry. Thank you, thank you for a fine learning tool.'
Lorraine Anderson, Professor of Hebrew, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Roxbury, Massachusetts, USA.

'Church groups and pilgrims might find this course of particular interest.'

'Congratulations to those who produced this excellent course. The fact that the course is based from the beginning on the biblical text of Genesis makes it so much more interesting than the traditional approach of starting with the alphabet.
'The explanations in the course book are detailed and easy to follow, and the tests at the end of each lesson are not too formidable. In fact the whole approach is 'user friendly'. It's a big help to hear the biblical text read aloud on a cassette.'
Elaine Thomas, Wycliffe translator
I have just been looking through the SEAN Hebrew course and would like to put on record my appreciation of it. Alec Motyer's endorsement, of course, sets a seal of excellence on it, but I have noted the following:
* The clear modern pronunciation, which avoids the archaic rabbinic sounds and the artificial sounds of the traditional grammarians pronunciation, was a very good choice.
* The use of the cards for key outlines was a good policy.
* The cheerful and friendly tone of the books is a bonus for students who can feel very vulnerable and intimidated by Hebrew.
* The beautifully printed Hebrew characters which are very clear and in the reading book, practically large, are helpful.
* I have a personal copy of the course and bought one for the college library which I encourage the students to use and I know some students have bought their own copies.
